Student seminar opens in Jerusalem

(Jerusalem Post, December 21, 1961)

The students must serve as the channel for scientific advancement in developing countries, the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Abba Eban, said at Beit Hillel in Jerusalem last night.

He was speaking at the official opening of an international seminar of the role of the student in developing countries and on the international cooperation between student organizations.

Student representatives from 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe as well as delegates from New Zealand and Canada attending the two week seminar, organized by the National Union of Israel students.

Mr. Eban noted that this was the first generation in which religion and science did not appear as antagonists but as partners, and the developing countries must absorb technological advances without inner hesitations. International cooperation must be a condition for the development of the countries of Africa and Asia, Mr. Eban said.

Qualitatively, there was nothing that had been attained by advanced countries that could not be achieved by developing states he said.
