Israeli & American teens to build houses for poor in Nicaragua
Seven Israeli teens, grades 10-12 from the Leo Baeck School in Haifa will be traveling to Nicaragua on February 16, joining their Jewish teen peers from the Shaaray Tefila (a reform synagogue) community of Northern Westchester Bedford, NY.
This unique social action program aims to bring Jewish teens to build houses for poor families in some of the impoverished districts of Nicaragua. The Israeli teens will begin their trip by first flying to meet their friends in Bedford. Immediately afterwards the whole group will leave together for Nicaragua.
The activities will take place in conjunction with the non-profit organization "Bridges to Community". The teenagers will bend metal, mix cement and lay blocks that will, at the end of their hard work, become houses for locals in need.
For Shaary Tfila this is not their first trip to Nicaragua, but their 5th they have helped build 30 houses and donated over 7 tons of relief aid to the local community.
This unique humanitarian aid project is one of many activities taking place thanks to the long standing cooperation between Leo Baeck and the Reform movement in North America.
