NISPED’s Message Reaches South Africa
September 2009
Eliminating rural poverty was the focus of a two-day seminar held in Kimberly for senior South African Northern Cape Provincial Government officials.
Facilitated by NISPED Director of International Development, Rafi Goldman and organized together with Wayne Sussman, Executive Director of the South Africa-Israel Forum and Hazel Jenkins, Premier of the Northern Cape Province and a senior official of the ruling ANC party, the workshop addressed the challenges of and opportunities to eliminate rural poverty. Following the workshop, Ms. Jenkins invited Mr. Goldman to deliver the keynote address at the Provincial Economic Summit to be held during the third week of November 2009.
The workshop was an outcome of Ms. Jenkins' experience during a NISPED 10 day study mission to Israel in the fall of 2008 and one further level in the developing ties between NISPED and the Northern Cape Province. In October 2009, Mr. Sussman will accompany a delegation of senior provincial officials to a NISPED study mission to be led by Mr. Norman Shushu, Minister of Agriculture of the Northern Cape Province.
Immediate future plans for NISPED and the Northern Cape Province Government include joint efforts to develop and implement an intensive rural poverty elimination program to establish rural agricultural cooperatives in the province for emerging black and colored farmers.
